The Worlds in Space consists largely of reworked extracts from Arcana Caelestia and Spiritual Diary, and was intended as an invitation to read that larger work. It is, perhaps, the most controversial of Swedenborg's books, and one that even Swedenborg's followers have struggled to embrace. Swedenborg asserts that there are places in the spiritual universe whose inhabitants express the spiritual states we might encounter on our journey from the outer natural level of life (our 'Egypt') to that of greater spiritual and heavenly insights (our 'Canaan'). Hence this material was mainly placed by Swedenborg amidst his explorations of the book of Exodus, describing the 'journey' from Egypt to Canaan. As he encounters spirits from various 'planets' he shows that life from other planets is intelligent and human too. He learnt how they lived and what they believed. A fascinating read. Also, a good guide to this work can be found here by Wilson Van Dusen.
